It isn’t getting subscribers or social media followers.
It isn’t picking and setting up the (sometimes) complicated tools and tech stack you’ll need for your business.
And it isn’t thinking of topics to write about or choosing the perfect shade of orange for your logo.
No, it’s finding the time to do it all.
Most solopreneurs are what’s called part-time creators.
You probably have a “day job.” You probably have a family. Solopreneurship is your “side hustle” — the big thing you’re trying to build in between the TPS reports for your boss and the bedtime stories for your kids.
I know because you’ve told me. Through emails and surveys, the overwhelming majority of you are “solopreneurs on the side.”
And I know because I’m in the same boat as you.
Family > Day Job > Side Hustle
I have a beautiful wife and three amazing children. They always come first.
After family, my work (for Dave Chesson and Kindlepreneur now, Jon Morrow and Smart Blogger back when) takes precedent.
As the Head of Content, I have numerous responsibilities. I have lots of people counting on me. My plate’s very full.
So how do I find time for my side gig, The Solopreneur Experiment?
That’s the thing.
Sometimes, I don’t.
There are only so many hours in a day and so many days in a week. And, sometimes, things I’d like to do have to be bumped.
Children will get sick. Marathon work meetings will consume my day. Something has to give and, for me, that something is my side hustle.
I’m sure you can relate.
It’s not that you don’t want to write more blog posts or emails, or be more active on X/Twitter, or spend more time growing your skills.
You just don’t have the time.
And as much as I’ve love to give you a time management tip, trick, strategy, or hack that’ll solve your problems…
I can’t.
I can’t because one doesn’t exist. And I know it doesn’t exist because I’ve consumed every time management tip, trick, strategy, and hack in existence in the hopes of finding the magic bullet…
…the secret to solving all of my “I can’t do everything” woes.
What I can do is encourage you to do what I’m doing:
One Thing.
Do one thing this week that moves your side solopreneurship hustle forward.
Get up early if you have to. Or go to bed late. Just find the time, somehow, some way.
For me, the “one thing” is writing the email you’re reading now.
All three of my children have the flu. My wife and I are sleep deprived and — unless God spares us — likely hours away from catching the bug ourselves.
Add this to my growing list of weekly Smart Blogger Kindlepreneur tasks, and I have all the excuses in the world not to craft a newsletter this week.
I’m busy. I’m tired. And I’m probably going to be very sick, very soon.
But I’m still doing my one thing.
What about you?
What’s one thing you can do this week that’ll push your solopreneur dreams forward?
Message me on X/Twitter and let me know.
I’m rooting for you…
Hoping you have a far better week than I’ll inevitably be having…
Talk to you next week.
